KANSAS CITY — A Kauffman Stadium ball boy fielded a hit down the first-base line by Brian Roberts in the fourth inning, perhaps thinking the ball was foul, and umpires awarded Roberts a ground-rule double. Someone from the Royals dugout popped out and glared down the line at the ball boy, but Roberts gave him a break.
“It’s not the end of the world,” Roberts said. “You’ve seen it happen before. I’ve done way dumber stuff on a baseball field than he did.”

TEX GETS A REST
Mark Teixeira did not start Sunday’s game but it was not related to his troublesome right wrist, Joe Girardi said.
“Just a day off, that’s all it is. He’ll be back in there (Monday),” Girardi said. Teixeira pinch-hit in the ninth inning and grounded out with the tying run in scoring position.
Asked if Teixeira said he needed a rest, Girardi said, “No. Just being proactive with it.” … Reliever Shawn Kelley (back) will have at least one more rehab stint in the minors, Girardi said… Girardi said he told catcher Francisco Cervelli (hamstring) to take ground balls at first while he rehabs in the minors. The Yankees may have a difficult decision to make when Cervelli is ready, considering how well John Ryan Murphy has played as Brian McCann’s backup.
