Free-agent kicker Jay Feely flees from New York Jets to Cardinals

Unable to reach an agreement with the Jets, free-agent kicker Jay Feely signed a two-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals Friday. Financial terms weren’t immediately available.

Feely became the first unrestricted free agent to leave the Jets. Under the new “Final Four” rule, the Jets are now eligible to sign an unrestricted free agent as long as the first-year salary doesn’t exceed Feely’s 2010 pay in Arizona, believed to be about $1.5 million.

Feely, 33, became expendable Feb. 23, when the Jets signed former Cowboy Nick Folk, coming off a disastrous season. Feely’s agent, Glenn Schwartzman, said yesterday he had contacted the Jets. The team didn’t improve its offer.

“Nothing had changed,” Schwartzman said. Feely made $1.5 million last season.

Feely made 30 of 36 field goals last season (not counting two misses in the AFC Championship Game), but he will be best remembered for handling the punting duties in the wild-card game when regular Steve Weatherford couldn’t punt because of an irregular heartbeat.
