Bill de Blasio – in an early morning TV appearance – called Republican Joe Lhota “a little bit desperate” for attacking his sleep habits.

“Lhota is just grasping at straws at this point,” de Blasio said in an interview on WPIX on Monday morning.

The interview, which was supposed to air at 7:45 am, started about ten minutes late. De Blasio’s rep blamed the late start time on the station arriving late.

On Saturday, de Blasio arrived one hour late for an 11:30 am press conference, and admitted he wasn’t a “morning person.” His admission prompted Lhota, who is trying to erase a double digit deficit in the polls, to blast him as unfit to lead.

“Being mayor is a 24-hour a day job,” Lhota fumed on Sunday.

Speaking on WPIX a day before the election, de Blasio also promised that he wouldn’t raise taxes on the middle class. He said the only New Yorkers whose tax bills will be raised are those who make over $500,000.

“I’ve been very very clear. The only plan I have is to tax people who make half a million or more,” he said.

De Blasio also said the next mayor must do everything to end any form of racial profiling in the city – including the recent alleged incidents at Barney’s and Macy’s.

Black shoppers at both of the department stores claimed they were stopped and accused of stealing after buying high-end goods simply because of the color of their skin.

“We have to get away from what we’ve seen at Barney’s and Macy’s, obviously,” he said.
