Has Andrew Cuomo caught anti-fracking fever?

Gov. Cuomo‘s hand-picked Democratic Party director, Rodney Capel, is ridiculously accusing the state GOP’s buttoned-down chairman, Ed Cox, of selling out to “the most extreme elements of the national Tea Party Republicans.”

His pretext for this overheated attack? Cox gave a speech in Buffalo touting the benefits of fracking for natural gas upstate — and justly chastised Cuomo for blocking an industry that would bring thousands of well-paying jobs.

Never mind that no less of a true-blue Democrat than President Obama supports fracking.

Never mind that the economic justification for expanding casino gambling upstate, a Cuomo cause, applies many times over to fracking.

Never mind that well-regulated drilling would be a huge boon to the environment — since clean-burning gas generates half as much planet-warming carbon dioxide as coal.

When he took office, Cuomo promised a decision on green-lighting fracking that would be based on science, not politics.

Obviously, Capel did not get the memo.
