The i’s do not have it.
An iPhone iOS 11 glitch is making some Apple users consider throwing their newly updated phones out the window. The lowercase letter “i” is being replaced by gibberish.
Instead of the letter, a capital “A” or an exclamation point and a square box with a question mark inside of it are appearing when using Apple’s native keyboard, messing with people’s texts and tweets and generally being a nuisance. It’s not just newly purchased phones that are affected– iOS 11 users from iPhone 6 and up are also seeing the glitch.
“(Why… is my iPhone changing all of my I’s into question marks? Is this an existential test? Have I come undone?),” tweeted BuzzFeed employee Saeed Jones.
“Why does an “I” auto correct to an “A” with a weird symbol next to it? Is this a glitch related to the iPhone update ? I hate technology. ??,” wrote @ItsChadli.
“This iPhone letter “I” glitch is starting to get really annoying. I think they need to release 11.0.4 sooner than later,” said @akoczur_.
The glitch has caused people to be creative when typing “i,” including spelling out “eye” or using an eye emoji. Others have avoided the issue because their lowercase “i” autocorrects to a grammatically correct uppercase.
According to the Guardian, the problem stems from a new cloud feature involving cloud-based synchronization for predictive text; hence, the reason why so many people are seeing the problem. The feature allows autocorrections to be shared with the person’s other Apple devices and will create new words.
In order to fix the glitch, Apple has made latest software, iOS 11.1.1, available. Before the update, Apple addressed the issue on their Support page, saying users should go to Settings >General >Keyboard >Text Replacement to add an autocorrect replacement for the lowercase “i” with an uppercase one.”For Phrase, type an uppercase “I”. For Shortcut, type a lowercase “i.””
It appeared the glitch was an autocorrect problem, as, on some phones, the glitch appeared briefly before the phone autocorrected lowercase “i”s into uppercase ones.
