A violent trio attacked and stabbed a homeless man who was playing chess in Union Square early Monday, cops said.

The three men approached the 39-year-old victim on the east side of Union Square near E. 14th St. at about 3:30 a.m. and began arguing with him. One of the brutes plunged a sharp object into the homeless man’s chest before the group ran off.

EMS took the victim to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition. Police had not made any arrests.
