A private garbage truck struck and killed a woman as she crossed a Greenwich Village street Tuesday night, police said.
Witnesses described a gruesome scene at the corner of Sixth Ave. and W. 8th St., where the truck hit the 60-year-old victim at about 11:40 p.m.
Medics took her to Lenox Hill Hospital, where she died, authorities said.
Elana Abt, 25, watched in horror as the slow-moving truck hit the woman, pulling her under one of its wheels.
“She basically got pulled underneath and it crushed her skull. You can hear everything break,” she said. “”I couldn’t believe what I was witnessing. There’s no words to describe what you feel when you literally watch someone die.”
The woman was toting a black rolling suitcase, witnesses said.
“The woman was under the truck laying on her stomach, there was a lot of blood on the sidewalk,” said witness Dex Sexton, 43. “A lot of blood near her head coming out of her mouth.”
The truck driver, a 46-year-old man, stayed on the scene, holding his head in his hands as cops investigated.
“He was distraught. He knew that he obviously just killed someone,” Sexton said.
