The leader of one of the White House’s seven banned countries dismissed Donald Trump as a political greenhorn in danger of global harm with his controversial executive order.
Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani said Trump is out of his league dabbling in foreign policy.
“A man had been living in another world and now has entered the world of politics,” Iran’s state TV reported Rouhani as saying on Wednesday.
Tehran has been mulling reciprocal measures against Trump’s immigration mandate that prohibits Iranians — along with citizens from six other predominantly Muslim nations in the Middle East and Africa — from entering the United States. So far, the nation has not hinted at its plans.
As the travel ban took effect on Saturday, Rouhani made note of Trump’s penchant for alienating nations and reminded him that the “Berlin Wall collapsed many years ago.”
He did not address Trump’s order directly but appeared to be commenting on his pledge to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
The travel ban would essentially impact Iranian citizen and Oscar nominee Asghar Farhadi, who wrote and directed best foreign film contender “The Salesman.”
Farhadi said he will not attend the awards show out of protest.
Also on Wednesday, Rouhani warned that Trump’s decree will certainly harm countries beyond the seven impacted, including his own.
“It will take him a long time and will cost the United States a lot, until he learns what is happening in the world,” Rouhani in a state television address.
Trump has defended his executive order as a national security necessity and rejected accusations that it was carried out to target the Islamic faith.
