The oath: My watch shall not end…so long as IKEA sells fur rugs.
Fans of the biggest show on TV right now, “Game of Thrones,” were surprised to learn recently that the customary attire of the men of the Night’s Watch is simply a cut-up IKEA rug.
Thankfully, fans looking to get into the cosplay side of things could make their own cape — with the help of instructions from IKEA itself.
The show’s costume designer, Michele Clapton, initially went searching for a suitable way to outfit the cast with fur. Her solution: utilizing the furniture retailer’s rugs.
Still, that came only after Clapton added a few finishing touches. The rugs were cut, shaved, waxed and frosted so they “belonged to the landscape,” Clapton said at the Los Angeles Getty Museum last year, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The designer also added rubber straps — clearly so that Jon Snow and company could prepare for Winter with ease and comfort.
Behind advertising agency SMFB Oslo, IKEA Norway even unveiled a user-friendly instruction guide on making your own Night’s Watch cape.
The illustrations really just tell customers to cut a circular hole in the middle of the rug.
Nonetheless, the company has reported that since the IKEA-“Thrones” bombshell broke, sales of their Solde and Ludde rugs have increased 775%, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
The company also revealed photos of its staff members clad in Skold rugs roaming one of the stores. They were dubbed “IKEA Night’s Watch.”
The rugs are not sold in the U.S., the San Francisco Chronicle adds.
While Winter in Westeros will seemingly spill into Season 8, there are only two episodes left this year. So, find a way to accessorize a rug to truly become a part of the Watch, and soon!
