Larry David isn’t just funny — he’s also politically desirable.
Both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders wanted the “Saturday Night Live” funnyman to endorse their presidential campaigns, a series of hacked emails released Saturday by WikiLeaks reveal.
Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta asked fellow campaign staffer Sara Latham if she could figure out who David was backing in the Democratic primary after he had played Sanders in several “Saturday Night Live” skits.
Latham responded that communications director Kristina Schake would reach out to Rob Reiner, one of David’s colleagues on the late night show who had already expressed support for Clinton’s candidacy.
To her superiors’ disappointment, Schake found out that David did not plan to endorse any candidate as he intended to continue playing Sen. Sanders in skits. She also found out that they weren’t alone in seeking the comedian’s support.
“Bernie’s campaign contacted him right after the skit to ask him to endorse and he declined,” Schake said in an email.
David had voters across the country keel over laughing after he appeared in an SNL skit titled “Bern Your Enthusiasm.”
The 69-year-old comedian played a grumpy, picky Sanders who refuses to shake a rally attendant’s hand after she coughs in it.
