A small alpine town in Switzerland hired its new “hermit” this week — an unusual job that combines a solitary religious lifestyle with constant tourist interactions.

Michael Daum, a German ex-policemen, was chosen from 22 applicants for the position in the tranquil Verena gorge.

Following his career in law enforcement Daum, 55, is said to have studied meditation and theology.

The position dates back to 15th century Christianity where devout men like St. Anthony of Egypt or St. Verena of Solothurn lived a lifestyle close to that of a monasterial priest or nun.

Beginning October 1, Daum will act as a caretaker of the hermitage, ensuring chapels in the area like St. Martin’s remain tidy and in order. He will also take part in baptismal and wedding ceremonies.

In return for his duties, the German hermit will live rent-free in the secluded mountain cottage, as well as receive a monthly stipend of just over $2,000 dollars.

With no time limit to the position, previous hermits have worked for 25 years, according to USA Today reports.

Daum won’t be a complete recluse though — a large part of his role will be dispensing tidbits of wisdom to vistors of the town.
