Stop and learn, Donald.
The GOP presidential nominee revealed during the presidential debate he apparently knows nothing about stop-and-frisk — the unconstitutional policing policy Trump said he wants to take nationwide.
Trump stated two major falsehoods about the one-time NYPD policy during the debate — as Hillary Clinton and moderator Lester Holt both called him out.
Even an NYPD public information officer called out Trump, tweeting during the debate, “Critics decried that having fewer stops in #NYC would result in higher crime. The very opposite occurred.”
Trump said Holt was “wrong” in saying stop-and-frisk searches are unconstitutional.
It’s Trump who was wrong.
Former Manhattan Federal Judge Shira Scheindlin struck down the policy in 2013. She said it violated the Fourth Amendment, with unreasonable searches and seizures, and the Fourteenth Amendment, by negating equal protection for minorities. New York City, under former Mayor Bloomberg, appealed the decision, but eventually dropped the appeal and ended stop-and-frisk for good.
Trump also insisted in the debate that crime and murders have gone up since stop-and-frisk stopped.
He told Clinton she was “wrong” in pointing out that crime has continued falling under Mayor de Blasio.
Once again: You’re wrong, Trump.
The number of stop-and-frisk searches fell from 685,700 in 2011 to 22,900 in 2015 — a 97% plunge. During that time, several violent crimes dropped to record lows. The latest NYPD stats show that murders, robberies and shootings have all dropped in 2016 from the year before.
Trump told a town hall last week that if elected, he would spread stop-and-frisk nationwide to curb “violence in the black community.”
Mayor de Blasio called out Trump for his cluelessness, saying the brash businessman has “no experience with policing, no experience with public safety.”
