He’s Jared Fogle’s worst nightmare.
An adorable black Labrador named Bear is being credited with sniffing out a hidden thumb drive during a search through the former Subway star’s home, helping lead to child porn charges.
The 2-year-old rescue dog is said to be one of just several dogs in the country trained to detect electronic devices with just his snout.
“It’s just like any other K-9 training, like with the narcotics or explosives or anything. You get the dog used to the odor and reward them as they indicate on it,” Bear’s trainer, Todd Jordan, told WISH-TV.
With electronics, Bear’s able to detect a chemical smell from the devices — some of which are as small as a fingernail, NBC News reported.
Jordan demonstrated the micro-sleuth’s talents by hiding various items around a room.
In less than 10 minutes, the four-legged crime fighter was able to locate a small memory card in a book bag, a flash drive in a box, and an iPad in a filing cabinet, WISH-TV reported.
Each success rewards Bear with a treat.
What Jordan hasn’t been able to hide is Bear’s spectacular success.
News of his astonishing abilities has since caught the attention of the Seattle Police Department, which offered to buy him for $9,500, a price Jordan said is comparable to the cost of Bear’s training.
Once out west, he’ll work with SPD child-pornography detectives in hopes of making similar busts out there.
“It’ll be bittersweet,” Jordan said. “It’s sad to see him go, but the type of work he’s doing, it’s very rewarding.
“He’s probably one of the sweetest dogs I’ve ever worked with.”
