City Education officials are spreading the word about gifted programs to underserved neighborhoods in a new effort to boost diversity in elite classrooms.

The Education Department mailed 28,000 postcards with information on how to apply to gifted kindergarten programs to families in the Bronx and Brooklyn this month.

Often in those areas, too few kids qualify for the programs to fill even a single classroom. So entire districts go without any gifted kindergarten classes.

“It doesn’t matter what zip code a child lives in or what school they attend,” said agency spokeswoman Devora Kaye. “We believe every child deserves a great education and the best opportunity to succeed.”
