NYPD officers clad in riot gear marched shoulder-to-shoulder to block protesters from snarling any of the city’s bridges, highways and tunnels late Wednesday, determined to prevent a repeat of the shutdown orchestrated by Ferguson protests just 10 days earlier.

It wasn’t enough. Traffic along the West Side Highway was halted after 9 p.m. as about 100 demonstrators blocked the roadway. Police with batons moved in quickly. Protesters struck the Lincoln Tunnel next. It was closed 15 minutes before reopening after 11 p.m.

The Brooklyn Bridge wasn’t spared, either. Crowds moved across after midnight.

From Rockefeller Center and Madison Ave. in Midtown to the Staten Island street corner where Eric Garner was placed into a fatal chokehold, thousands of demonstrators gathered to express frustration that an NYPD cop was not indicted Wednesday by a Richmond County grand jury.

The NYPD reported at least 40 arrests overnight.

Twitter was also overwhelmed by angry reaction with the hashtags #EricGarner, #BlackLivesMatter, #ICantBreathe and #ShutItDown trending.

Officer Daniel Pantaleo may still face internal disciplinary and federal charges related to the July 17 death of the 43-year-old Garner, but for one day at least the outrage was palpable as even Mayor de Blasio struck an apologetic tone in addressing the news.

Daniel Skelton, a New Jersey man, stood at the site where Garner died, holding loosies, or untaxed individual cigarettes, much like Garner did moments before his death.

The grand jury decision comes a little more than a week after a similar scene in Ferguson. Mo., where white police Officer Darren Wilson was not indicted in the shooting death of unarmed black teen Michael Brown Jr.

NYPD and city officials wanted to avoid a repeat of the violence, looting and burning of businesses that took place in the St. Louis suburb in the hours and days after the Nov. 24 decision.

So far protesters have taken the decision lying down — literally. Large groups staged “die-ins” in Grand Central Terminal, at Columbus Circle, outside Radio City Music Hall and later on the West Side Highway, laying on the pavement.

A crowd standing on W. 57th St. and Eighth Ave. blocked traffic and chanted “No justice, no peace!”

Demonstrators stood at the north end of Union Square to protest the grand jury decision in the Garner case. They carried signs that read “Ferguson is Everywhere.”

Subway service to Grand Central was halted when approximately 300 protesters flooded the station at 10:30 p.m. NYPD had trains bypass the station.

Video caught the entire Eric Garner episode in brutal fashion and Wednesday’s protests let authorities know that justice takes many forms.
