The cat saved the day.

A California boy was viciously attacked by a dog while playing on his bicycle and the incident could have been much worse if not for the family’s cat that intervened and saved his owner.

Surveillance video shows the boy outside on a sunny day when the dog begins running up to him and bites his leg.

He then started trying to pull the boy down the sidewalk with his mouth when miraculously the family’s cat Tara comes out of nowhere and jumps in front of the dog – chasing the animal from their property.

The incident occurred at a home in Southwest Bakersfield Tuesday, reports TV Station ABC23. The boy Jeremy, 4, needed only a few stitches and is doing well, his family told the station.

“Tara is my hero,” he said.

The family has had the cat since 2008.

“I’ve never seen a cat do that,” Roger Triantatilo, Jeremy’s father, told the station. “Especially ours. It just shows how much she really has a family-oriented mind set.”

The dog, which belonged to a neighbor is now under observation by Bakersfield Animal Control and will be euthanized, the station reported.
