One of two charter school authorizers in New York will stop approving new schools until the state gives it more money for its operations, a top official vowed this week.

Joseph Belluck, chairman of the State University of New York charter school committee, said he was disappointed state lawmakers OKd more charter applications without sufficient additional funds in the budget.

But the Cuomo administration said SUNY’s Charter Schools Institute got a 5.8% budget boost, and other agencies saw no increases. Belluck, whose committee governs the institute, insisted that hike is not enough. Cuomo spokeswoman Dani Lever said, “We fully expect the Charter Schools Institute to comply with the law and approve applications for high-performing charter schools.”

Charters need approval by either the Charter Schools Institute or the Board of Regents.
