Veterans’ Advocates say Mayor de Blasio still hasn’t seen the light — even though his administration hastily raised a long absent POW/MIA flag at City Hall under cover of darkness.
The black flag came down nearly a year ago during roof repairs.
Around 10 p.m. Tuesday — six hours after the Daily News made an inquiry — a worker raised the POW/MIA standard in front of the building.
“We believed it was important to correct the mistake and raise the flag as quickly as possible,” a de Blasio spokesman said.
Rep. Peter King (R-L.I.) found the city’s response somewhat lacking. “There should have been at least a brief, respectful ceremony,” said King.
Joe Bello, founder of NY MetroVets, said the slapdash flag-raising signaled the administration considers vets “an afterthought,” while Paul Rieckhoff of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America called the snafu “a bad situation handled badly.”
