ALBANY – Gov. Cuomo‘s State of the State address Wednesday also served as the kickoff of his re-election campaign as he looked back as much as forward.
Cuomo took office in 2011 following the disasters of Eliot Spitzer and David Paterson — a time when late-night comics ridiculed New York.
“In three years, you have reversed decades of decline and made dramatic and undeniable progress,” Cuomo told the legislators in attendance.
He cited the passage of same-sex marriage, gun control, and a reform of the tax code. He then unveiled a centrist agenda he hopes plays in all parts of the state.
Senate GOP Leader Dean Skelos told reporters that Cuomo sounded like a “good moderate Republican.”
Many Democrats found themselves more buoyed by Mayor de Blasio’s unabashed liberal agenda than by Cuomo’s centrist polices.
But Cuomo is also smart enough to know that come November, those Dems have nowhere else to go.
