The family of a Miami woman who has been in a coma for six days after she was brutally attacked by her Craigslist roommate is speaking out to avoid more senseless violence from online strangers.
Danielle Jones, who family described as “vibrant” and “independent,” was savagely assaulted a week ago on her 23rd birthday by Byron Mitchell, a roommate she had found on CraigsList a week prior for her Downtown Miami apartment.
“I’m still in shock, I can’t comprehend that someone can do this to someone, mutilate them in such a way and try to kill them.” Jones’s mother, Aimee Nikolove, told NBC News.
Jones was slashed in the head and face and has suffered a severe brain injury, according to her family, who shared graphic images of her injuries with the press.
“My daughter’s face is cut up like he was going to take her face off. She has a brain injury and no one knows what the prognosis is,” Nikolove said.
“She has scars everywhere, around her eyes, lips. She has slashes all down her head,” Katilin Cabot, Jones’s cousin said.
Jones’s assailant was arrested on Feb. 15 and told cops that he acted in self-defense after she went after him with a knife.
Mitchell has been charged with attempted murder.
Jones’s family started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for medical costs and hope her horrific attack won’t happen to anyone else.

“Bringing attention to this and raise some type of awareness for other people to be careful because I can’t explain in words how hard it is to see her like this,” Cabot, her cousin said.
