Millennials really are Generation Me — at least according to one survey.

About 71% of American adults think “selfish” describes 18- to 29-year-olds “very well” or “somewhat well,” according to a Reason-Rupe national telephone poll.

Almost two-thirds, or 65%, of respondents said the same about the word “entitled.”

Despite their self-centered reputation, millennials were also seen as tolerant, hard-working and responsible, particularly by the under-30 participants who were judging their peers.

Of all of the 18-29 year olds surveyed, 77% said they would describe their age group as responsible. Less than half of the over-30 respondents agreed with them.

The two groups were in agreement went it came to the selfish description, as under-30s were just as likely to say the label describes millennials as over-30s.

The survey of 1,000 adults was conducted via landlines and cellphones from Aug. 6 to Aug. 10.

Millennials are often the topic of conversation and the subject of trend pieces. As The Washington Post’s Alexandra Petri points out on the ComPost blog, a recent New York Times article, “Generation Nice,” is a trend piece written about millennial trend pieces.
