Phones and screens will be replaced by augmented reality devices , or so according to Rony Abovitz, the CEO of Magic Leap.

In a Reddit Ask Me Anything thread, Abovitz shared his vision of a future where his company’s technology—which is focused on using augmented reality to enhance the real world by creating virtual 3-D objects—will make users leave behind smartphones and transition into using AR headsets.

“We believe that people may want to use this new form of computing as much, if not more than their mobile device,” Abovitz said.

Virtual reality and augmented reality have been a hot topic in the tech world recently. Most tech giants have announced that they are developing some variation of virtual or augmented reality device. Microsoft, Facebook, Sony and even Nike have all jumped on the bandwagon.

Magic Leap filed a patent early January that unveiled what its technology will do and what its headset will look like. Magic Leap will not only focus on gaming and entertainment, but its technology will expand to grocery stores where shoppers can interact with products to learn about their nutritional value and it’ll also be used by doctors to show patients their internal anatomy by virtually recreating organs in 3-D.

“Everyday computing will be amazing on our platform—and we are in talks with all kinds of app and experience developers, including social, mapping, productivity, creation, communication,” Abovitz said.

Movie studios such as Lionsgate, Marriott hotels and Canadian tourism agencies have already started using virtual and augmented reality to preview their products.

Abovitz said that glasses-like wearable devices will make screens obsolete, but there will be a transition period.

A Reddit user asked Abovitz if society even needed a physical screen with technology such as Magic Leap and he replied, “no :-).”
