Pee-wee is leaving the playhouse for a little R&R.
Netflix’s new Pee-wee Herman movie will be called “Pee-wee’s Big Holiday,” the forthcoming flick’s producers announced.
Pee-wee whisperer Judd Apatow and company dropped new details about the film Tuesday, promising an “epic story of friendship and destiny” involving a “fateful meeting with a mysterious stranger that inspires Pee-wee Herman to take his first-ever holiday.”
Actor Paul Reubens, who has portrayed Pee-wee for decades, and “Comedy Bang! Bang!” vet Paul Rust wrote the movie, while John Lee will direct.
Lee, a TV vet who has helmed shows like “Inside Amy Schumer” and “Broad City,” is making his feature directorial debut.
The movie will be Pee-wee’s first appearance on screen since 1988’s “Big Top Pee-wee,” though Reubens did revive the iconic bow-tied character for a successful Broadway stage show in 2010.
“Judd and I dreamt up this movie four years ago. The world was much different back then — Netflix was waiting by the mailbox for red envelopes to arrive,” Reubens’ alter ego said in a statement.
“I’ve changed all that. The future is here. Get used to it. Bowtie is the new black.”
Production is set to begin in March.
