The wife of a Texas pastor incited a major controversy on a noted atheist’s Facebook page when she deemed reality star Josh Duggar’s admission of molesting five girls as “playing doctor” and that the female victims should also be held accountable.
Carrie Hurd, the wife of Texas pastor Patrick Hurd, made the controversial comments Saturday on the Facebook page of Vyckie Garrison, who was named the 2014 Atheist of the Year by American Atheists. Garrison posted an interview she gave that was critical of the Christian family’s mentality towards sex which she said can easily lead to abuse because they are not properly educated on the topic or allowed to understand their own sexuality.
“The consequence of this abuse is, to them, a positive — it leads them to be saved,” Garrison wrote on her Facebook page. “To them, the abuse is something that has eternal consequences of great benefit and glory to God. They’re minimizing the harm and damage that’s been done to those girls, and minimizing the guilt that comes from the crime that Josh committed, because of that spiritual benefit.”
But Carrie Hurd took exception to Garrison’s comments and wrote the female victims, some of whom were reportedly assaulted in their sleep, should also be held accountable.
“You women want parity in the board room and you want equal wages all the way up the ladder, but when it comes to taking responsibility and being equal in other areas, it is always the man’s fault or responsibility. How many women bait, hit first, but are seldom arrested for abuse………….?” Carrie Hurd wrote. “When I was a kid, it was often called ‘playing doctor,’ there were just as many girls initiating this kind of behavior as boys. Most of those never went on to perp horrible things.”

Josh Duggar, 27, the oldest son of the uber-religious Arkansas family featured in the TLC reality show “19 Kids and Counting” admitted last week to fondling the breasts and genitals of at least five girls when he was a teenager. The family alerted authorities but he was never charged when the trooper they reported the crime to was soon arrested for possession of child pornography.
“Twelve years ago, as a young teenager, I acted inexcusably for which I am extremely sorry and deeply regret. I hurt others, including my family and close friends,” Duggar said in a statement. “I confessed this to my parents, who took several steps to help me address the situation.”
He resigned his position as a lobbyist with the Family Research Council (FRC), an organization dedicated to preserving family values in America.
Hurd, a Weatherford, Texas, mother of 11, wrote she is not a fan of the Duggars’ show but believes the family handled the situation appropriately and that he “should probably be left alone to live a good life.”
“You troll the news for any little Christian misbehavior. Get a life! Go to Iraq and fight ISIS if you are seriously worried about women being treated well by men and society,” she wrote.
Garrison, who writes the blog “No Longer Quivering” for women dealing with abuse from their religious experiences, made sure her saw the message and re-posted it on her Timeline.
“The difference between playing doctor and sexual assault is consent. And a sleeping child cannot give consent. Period,” a follower followers commented. Said another “Who are the people never to be blamed in child molestation cases? Answer: The victims.”
Garrison also noted the negative attention Hurd has received for her comments writing late last night “Dear FB friends and friends of friends, My default posting setting is “Public” … so if you make an outrageous and comepletely asinine comment on one of my posts, be prepared to be internationally mocked for your indefensible nonsense. #ThisIsTrue.”
