A Tennessee attorney is being held on $15 million bail for allegedly attempting to hire a hit man to kill his estranged wife, investigators said Friday.

Fred Auston Wortman III, of Collierville, got busted after a citizen tipped off law enforcement to his alleged scheme.

After the tip, a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agent met with Wortman Friday, posing as a potential hit man. Wortman gave the agent information about his wife and “a down payment for the murder,” the bureau said in a release.

Wortman, 39, was cuffed and charged with solicitation of first-degree murder.

His professional website, which was taken down after his arrest, identified Wortman as a “married (man) and the father of three children,” according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal. The page added: “He is a Christian.” Wortman was an unsuccessful candidate for a Collierville school board seat in 2012.

A certified pilot, Wortman was profiled by the Aviation Business Gazette in 2013, which identified him as a “positive example” for other pilots.
