Source: Braylon Edwards to sign with Jets, pending physical

The call of Jets fans has been answered — Braylon Edwards will be suiting up for Gang Green during training camp, pending a physical, according to a source. Edwards will provide some much-needed experience for a wide receiver core that is largely unproven and has sub-par talent. The veteran wide receiver was brought back to New York mid-season last year after having been with the Jets in 2009 and 2010. Edwards, 30, has not been able to replicate the success he had with the Jets, particularly in 2010, since then.

The Jets placed Santonio Holmes on the PUP list Tuesday, so the top receiver won’t be ready to practice at the beginning of training camp. That doesn’t prohibit Holmes from coming off at any point in camp, but he wouldn’t make any guarantees about being ready for the season when he spoke last weekend. That could leave the already weak receiving core even weaker, with Jeremy Kerley the number one option; Edwards could help alleviate a possible hole Holmes could leave, especially given his rapport with Mark Sanchez.

Between the Seahawks and Jets last season, Edwards made 18 receptions for 199 yards and one touchdown.

The Jets arrive in Cortland for training camp on Thursday afternoon and will have their first practice on Friday.
