Former Gov. Eliot Spitzer is trouncing rival Scott Stringer in the controller’s race, pulling ahead with a 19-point lead in a new poll.
Our Annie Karni reports:
Spitzer has a 56% – 37% lead among likely Democratic primary voters, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday.
The poll shows Spitzer widening the gap between him and his rival.
In a Quinnipiac poll conducted last month, Spitzer pulled out a 15% lead over the Manhattan borough presdient.
Among black voters polled between August 7 and 12, Spitzer was winning 3-1.
Among women, Spitzer led 54% to 36%.
Stringer, who released his first web ad Wednesday (

), led in one group: White voters.
There, he’s ahead of Spitzer 53% to 43%.
“Everyone seems to be against [Spitzer] except the voters, especially black voters,” Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, said in a statement.
“Spitzer is all over the TV screens, building on his better name recognition and leaving Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer in the dust.”
About 44% of voters admitted Spitzer’s sex scandal was “an issue,” but that it did not disqualify him from the race. Another 32% of likely voters said they didn’t even consider it an issue.
The poll surveyed 579 likely voters.
Spitzer’s supporters are also certain of their choice, the poll found. About 68% of voters said they would “definitely” vote Spitzer and would not change their mind before the Sept. 10 primary.
That is a stronger sign of support than mayoral candidate
in Tuesday’s Quinnipiac poll, which was soft.
In that survey, only 38% of voters said they would “definitely” vote de Blasio. The rest said there was a chance they might change their minds.
